Personal Injury: Brain Injuries
Brain injuries can be divided into two (2) main types: traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries result from a direct blow to the head. The force of the blow will break the skull and damage the brain itself, or cause the brain to move irregularly within the skull. Most traumatic brain injuries are caused by falls, and other major causes are motor vehicle accidents, being struck with an object, and sports. Acquired brain injuries result from injuries other than direct blows to the head, such as airway obstruction, choking, near drowning, blood loss, etc. Newborns can suffer brain injuries during birth due to lack of oxygen to the brain.
These injuries will often have devastating effects on a person's life, including his or her cognitive abilities (memory, concentration, communication), psychological and behavioral well being (anxiety, depression, mood swings, agitation), and physical status (seizures, headaches, speech impairment, vision, hearing, paralysis).
